The Amphibians are a multitalented collective of MCs, producers, DJs, and
vocalists, who also display skills as graffiti artists, B-boys (dancers), and
poets. Dedicated to a complete representation of all the art forms
(individual talents range from novelists to painters), the Amphibians aim to
take hip-hop to the ultimate limit of its expressive potential. The group was
founded by group members Alien (Khalil), Filli, and Miscellaneous Flux, three
students at DC's prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Now, the
family has grown to over 20 members, with a wide range of talents and
responsibilities. All three of the founding members have since graduated from
Duke Ellington. Miscellaneous Flux now attends American University and other
members have graduated from or currently attend Howard University, George
Washington, or Georgetown. This is all part of the Amphibians' dedication to
intellectual, as well as artistic, elevation.
Currently, the Amphibians orchestrate "The Lifeline", a weekly hip-hop poetry event at Nyala Restaurant, a black owned business which prospers from the clientele which the Amphibians attract with their event. Nyala's owners aren't the only ones who prosper from the event; it provides invaluable exposure for DC's performing artists. Every fourth Thursday, the Amphibians promote an artist showcase at Nyala Restaurant. Acts range from local funk and jazz bands to vocalists, as well as unsigned hip-hop acts. The event has been immensely successful and regularly attracts a hundred spectators to the small, intimate venue. When asked to use one word to describe the Amphibians' music, member/in-house producer HL of Khemystery responded, "Love." Fellow member/producer Trevor Goodchilde concurred. Along with Aquaman (also of Khemystery) and Syrus (of In Shallah), these two men are the foundation of the Amphibians' sound: lushly orchestrated collages of sound that stir the soul. Sonic influences ranging from John Coltrane to the Doors inspire the Amphibians' unique production. Lyrical influences from Organized Konfusion to biblical passages and scientific texts form the foundation of the Amphibians' lyricism. With the talent they possess, the Amphibians will make Washington the capital of the hip-hop nation. Join the movement. |
